5 Days Down

We've been in the house 5 days and I'm loving it even though I haven't been able to sleep in on my vacation because of the geese in the pond out back (yes at 3am they honk) and the framers start at around 7:30am on the house next door.

We got the washer and dryer hooked up last night and started laundry. This was one area of the house I was the most worried about. We didn't think the big monstrosities of a washer/dryer that we have would even fit and still be able to close the door. Door closes with a little bit of room left over. Then we were worried after hearing from others with a second floor laundry about noise and the machines shaking the house.

So before they drywalled the house we put as much insulation up in the ceiling of the first floor as we could to limit as much noise as possible. We also put insulation in the areas of the bathrooms too. So before we installed the washer we bought "Shake Away Noise Insulation Pads" from Lowes. I've done a few loads of laundry and can barely hear either machine. I even threw towels in the dryer before I went to bed closed the laundry room door and left my bedroom door open and couldn't hear a thing. I'm so relieved.

We also have all the blinds on the windows. I bet the neighbors are just as happy about that as we are! More pictures will follow....

  1. Congrats! Were going to try and get some 2x6 cross nailed in beneath the laundry room to lessen the joist movement and those pads look better than the little feet we are using now.

We have the same problem now with geese, we used some light darkening panels to lessen the sound since they are thick and it worked out well enough.

    1. Did either of you clear your "additions" with your PM? Ours is very insistent that we get exactly what we paid for, nothing more, nothing less. I would really like to do some of the things other bloggers have mentioned, but he was pretty adamant that we not.

    2. No, not officially :) It will only take me 15 min to do, but my guy is pretty cool. I think if I asked he wouldnt mind telling his guys to spend 5 min doing it. Hes already gone out of his way to handle some other things, so Im trying not to be a pain.

The only time to really do it is right before drywall because the drywall guys are like machines, they drywall whatever they see and dont care if it belongs or not.

I think your guy is just trying to cover his rear, we probably all signed a paper at pre-const that says were not allowed on the property unescorted. There are RH inspectors that come behind him, but Im pretty sure they are post drywall--I would go ahead and do some small things if you feel like it, insulation, etc

  2. Congrats again! Glad to hear that you are enjoying your new home. Have they fixed your counter yet?

  3. He works for you! It's your home and I would remind him of that.... I would also have him put in writing there isn't a need to do what we did. Also you'll get to rate him when your house is done. We just put in the insulation in the garage and in the ceilings and asked no one. We paid for it so there is no added cost to RH.

They're fixing our counters this week. We also need to have the tile in both master and hall bath fixed at the doors. The trim piece is higher than the tile and hurts your feet where the carpet transitions to tile. And there is a few boards that need replaced in the kitchen. So hopefully we get it all done while I'm on vacation.

Where are you building your house Rachel?

    1. We are planning to meet with him this week and I might bring it up again.

I hope they fix your counters right this time and that the flooring issues are taken care of properly the first time.

We are building in Timber Ridge in North Ridgeville. Our PM usually builds in Avon.

  4. Wait, so if you install insulation yourself, no one is going to say anything? Won't they notice?

  5. What did you end up finding out about the appraisal coming in low?

  6. We just went and did it and they drywalled right over it.

  7. I'm glad your machines are not shaking your place. We're getting new machines delivered today, thank goodness.

Sorry about your noisy geese. If it's any consolation we have ROWDY steer behind us. When one of them gets in a mood he causes a riot in the pasture behind the house. Better than loud neighbors. : )

Carter Family: We installed soundproofing insulation between the master and the bonus room. Not only did they not object, our PM gave helpful advice. It's your house! They put the drywall up the next morning. The time to do it is right after your pre-drywall inspection. We ran over to Lowes and bought the stuff and went back and filled in the wall in the dark. You could buy it before hand and take it with you to the meeting.
